BROWN RICE OVER WHITE RICE
Brown rice is a complex carbohydrate, which is a starch. White rice however, is a simple carbohydrate meaning it is a sugar. Complex carbohydrates can have 4 molecules for the stomach to break down, while simple only have 1. This means complex carbohydrates give the body long lasting, sustained energy as they take longer to break down. Simple carbohydrates take a short time to break down and therefore give a short burst of energy. This directly relates to out EduEat mission as complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice, are a better source for energy, and we need energy to last throughout the whole school day.
WATER OVER SOFT DRINK
Soft drink contains many artificial flavours and colours as well as sugar. Drinking soft drink can directly lead to many health disorders such diabetes and heart disease. Water is needed by the human body as the body is made from 70% water. We need a certain amount of water concentration in the blood. Without water we could become dehydrated and that can lead to headaches, unconsciousness and death. Humans can survive without soft drink but not without water. We need water during school to make sure we are hydrated and performing to the best of our abilities.
GRANOLA OVER CEREAL
Store bought cereal is processed, and loses many nutrients during this. Cereal also tends to be quite sweet meaning it has a lot of sugar contained within it. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate and does not give long lasting energy to the body due to the lack of molecules for the stomach to break down. Granola, especially homemade, contains much more nutritious foods such as nuts that give protein to the body.
HIMALAYAN OVER TABLE SALT
Table salt and Himalayan salt both contain sodium which is incredibly important for fluid balance in the body. However, Himalayan salt also contains many other minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron which are as important as sodium. Table salt is also processed so it can contained unwanted minerals and lose important nutrients.
